Diplomacy
The art and science of sustaining peaceful relationships between nations, groups, or individuals is diplomacy. Diplomacy is frequently used to refer to representatives from various parties addressing topics such as war, trade, the environment, technology, or sustaining security.
Diplomats are people who exercise diplomacy. Diplomats work to help their own country, encourage international collaboration, and keep the peace. A diplomatic mission is a group of diplomats from one country who live in another country. An embassy is a permanent diplomatic mission. An ambassador is the embassy’s chief diplomat. In addition to a single embassy, a big diplomatic mission may have representation. Consulates are other forms of expression.
Diplomacy is the main instrument of foreign policy which represents the broader goals and strategies that guide a state’s interactions with the rest of the world. International treaties, agreements, alliances, and other manifestations of international relations are usually the result of diplomatic negotiations and processes. Diplomats may also help to shape a state by advising government officials.
How Does Diplomacy Works?
Negotiation, or bargaining, is used in diplomacy. Typically, each participant in a negotiation will ask for more than they anticipate receiving. They then compromise or give up part of their desires in order to reach an agreement. Negotiations are frequently aided by an outside diplomat.
Sometimes in a negotiation, one side refuses to compromise. When this occurs, other parties involved in the talks may resort to diplomatic sanctions. Diplomatic penalties include reducing or removing all embassy personnel from the offending country. Lighter diplomatic penalties may include a president’s unwillingness to travel or meet with the offending country’s authorities.
Top diplomats have immunity, or protection, from search, arrest, and lawsuits in the country to which they are sent. They cannot be fined, arrested, or harmed in any way, even during the war, and they are not searched when they cross borders. This diplomatic immunity allows them to do their work and negotiate freely. Embassies are also not subject to the host country’s rules. In fact, they are considered part of the territory of the sending country.
